Gardening, Cooking and Decorating on the Prairie of Kansas

Welcome to Linderhof, our 1920's home on the prairie, where there's usually something in the oven, flowers in the garden for tabletops and herbs in the garden for cooking. Where, when company comes, the teapot is always on and there are cookies and cakes to share in the larder.

Reprise -- Christmas Cards

Christmas cards are an important part of Christmas. Channeling Martha Stewart, I decided to make my own cards this year . . . of course, December 15, is not the ideal time to start making one's own cards!

After five, I'm back to using the boxed cards I found on sale last year. . . .

This post is from December 7, 2008 -- Christmas card addressing a bit earlier than this year!

Christmas cards are a tradition at Linderhof. Boxes and boxes of Christmas cards. A sunny December afternoon in the breakfast room with a mug of cocoa as I address cards, write short notes in some of them and leave others for long letters which I'll do later.

Carols playing softly in the background. Julie Andrews, Kings College Choir, Kings Singers are favorites. I often sing along softly with the carols of Christmas.

Some friends are Christmas friends but we've kept in touch for 40 plus years watching children grow up and grandchildren arrive. Changes in employment and finally retirement. Others are far off friends that we write monthly but we still like to remember them at Christmas.

I usually get my cards in after Christmas sales and I like pretty ones with a short message (for there's more space for writing). No funny ones for us.

Christmas cards -- a time when you keep in touch with those both near and far.

It's time for Sunday Favorites at Happy to Design so please join Chari and see other favorites on this busy (and for some, snowy) Sunday!

I have a long way to go to become Martha also! I didn't get in the mood until this past week myself. Lovely setting for addressing and signing cards.

Every year I think "This year, this year I'll get those Christmas Cards out". And this year, again... I didn't do it. But the thought is there and there's always next year. Good for you tho!

It makes me so sad that Christmas cards are becoming a thing of the past with so many. I love Christmas cards and even though things have been super crazy around here these past 2 weeks, I still got my cards out. I love your setting for writing your cards! Beautiful!

have a wonderful Christmas!

Each year I find that I write fewer cards than the year before. I've been making ecards lately, with photos of the children and the past year's events, though, so I do keep in touch with friends and family at this time of year.

I agree they have become a thing of the past:( Every year we receive fewer and fewer cards..:(

I send out fewer and fewer..then of course one or two will arrive that I have forgotten..It was a lovely thing..a handwritten note still thrills me..But I can tell I am almost near the end...

Love your little writing nook.

Hi Martha...

My friend, sure wished that I could say that I made all of my Christmas cards! Hehe! I just need to get in gear and make some...maybe if I start now, I'd have enough by next Christmas? We receive a few handmade Christmas cards and I always really, really enjoy them! They really do have the "personal" touch!!! Nevertheless, I really enjoy all my cards...whether they are handmade or store bought! It's just nice hearing from friends and distant least during Christmas!

It sounds like you had a fabulous day of writing your cards, my friend! A quiet afternoon with Christmas carols playing softly in the background...a cup of hot cocoa!!! This is a lovely Christmas tradition...all in itself!!!

Thank you so much for sharing it with us for Sunday Favorites this week, Martha!!!

Warmest wishes and Christmas blessings to you and your family, my friend!

Martha seems to have much more time than I do. I tried to find time to do Christmas cards but it just wasn't in the stars.

Next year will be different. I will start much earlier..

Love, love your breakfast room. It looks so inviting especially facing your garden.
I have a ton of Christmas cards I keep buying them when they are reduced and now have shoe boxes full.
Great photo's.
