Gardening, Cooking and Decorating on the Prairie of Kansas

Welcome to Linderhof, our 1920's home on the prairie, where there's usually something in the oven, flowers in the garden for tabletops and herbs in the garden for cooking. Where, when company comes, the teapot is always on and there are cookies and cakes to share in the larder.

Reprise -- Polishing Silver

This post was originally done on December 2, 2008. As the year turned from 2009 to 2010, I find myself tackling cleaning chores that were neglected in the hustle and bustle of Christmastime. Polishing silver is a chore that got postponed until January. But December entertaining at Linderhof was sparse so if the silver didn't shine quite so much, it didn't matter.

I love to share previous posts with you so please join Chari at Happy to Design for her Sunday Favorites and see what everyone else considers their favorite!

Silver shines and glows at Linderhof -- whether a silver tray on the coffee table, the silver coffee set in the dining room or some silver candlesticks in the breakfast room. I'm pleased to join Beth at The Gypsy Fish for her second Silver Sunday. Please see what other shiny silver favorites are there.

Even though it needs polishing and attention, we do love our silver. We always pour coffee from the silver coffeepot whenever we have company. The smaller after dinner pot is used whenever we use the small demi tasse cups for after dinner coffee.

It is a chore to polish silver but I have always enjoyed household chores which includes polishing the silver and the copper.
My favorite silver polish is by Seeds, a British firm that I used to buy at Restoration Hardware. They still sell it but it is under their own label. In my opinion it is the best!
From the silver tea and coffee services to the silver trays which I adore, there is a lot of silver at Linderhof. A cold fall afternoon, with carols playing, is a good time to make sure that the silver is bright and shiny for holiday entertaining.

I just got out the silver coffee and tea service that was put away to make room for holiday decorations. Lots of polishing was needed but what a beautiful reward.

Your have some lovely silver pieces!

You have beautiful pieces! I do love gleaming silver, although I can't say I enjoy the task of polishing. I like pewter and hammered aluminum pieces too, because it gives me that silver color without needing to be polished. But they are not nearly as refined as silver.

Isn't is funny how we enjoy certain cleaning jobs. I hardly ever clean silver, but I love washing dishes. It's just so therapeutic so have my hands in soapy, warm water and get things clean! I know...I'm weird...lol.

Silver, copper and brass - isn't it satisfying to get them to a state of gleaming? I'll be hosting a baby shower in two weeks, and the tea service has to sparkle!

What a lot of work cleaning all that silver, but it is worth it in the end.

Hi,
I'm not that keen on polishing silver, but will look out for the silver polish you mentioned next time I visit home in the UK.
Thanks for the tip.

Your silver is beautiful! I use my silver daily and have found myself collecting more of it thoughout the years. I use my silver tea service when entertaining and a few silver teapots for daily use (I brew my hot tea everyday with loose leaf teas:). Here in the Lowcountry the high humidity makes silver polishing more frequent but I can honestly say that I have always enjoyed polishing silver:).

Blessings,

Kim

First off, Thank you, thank you, thank you. I was going to post a silver pot, but it really needed polished. I wanted to know what was a good product.
Second, your silver is absolutely lovely. I don't have near that size of a collection.

How do you tell if something is silver or silverplated, when antiquing?

Great post!

What pretty pieces! I too love to see my silver all shiny and polished. However, I've seen blogs with tarnished pieces and that's pretty too! I really like it all!

Your trays are absolutely beautiful and different from the average ovals and rounds. The diamond lattice is what give your trays charm! Beautiful silver collections!
