Gardening, Cooking and Decorating on the Prairie of Kansas

Welcome to Linderhof, our 1920's home on the prairie, where there's usually something in the oven, flowers in the garden for tabletops and herbs in the garden for cooking. Where, when company comes, the teapot is always on and there are cookies and cakes to share in the larder.

Party in the Garden

Between rain showers on Friday, we hosted what is known locally as a "Courtland Happy Hour" -- The Courtland Group started in the mid 90's when a dear friend who owned the Courtland Hotel (then a bed and breakfast in an old railroad hotel) closed both the hotel and the bar. But she had leftover liquor and so invited her good customers to her house on a Friday at 5:30 to use up her stash. We all brought our own drink and at her request, a snack.

And when she still had leftover liquor, she said "same time next week" and so the Courtland Happy Hour was born.

For many years it was an every Friday event but some of the originals moved on and although new members replaced them, the Courtland every Friday ceased to be.

The Courtland Hotel is now a historic hotel with different owners but the "Courtland Group" lives on. We don't have a Happy Hour every week now but the format is still the same -- you bring whatever you want to drink -- you bring a snack for the communal appetizer table. The party starts at 5:30 and lasts until the last guests leaves. (Usually between 7 and 7:30).

It's a fun way to start the weekend!

What a great photo Martha of the Courtland Happy Hour. I know they must have really enjoyed the beauty of your garden too.

Martha, it sounds like we're doing the same thing on Friday evenings! Only we call it Front (or back) Porch Fridays. Wonderful!

What a great Friday night happening. Your roses create a wonderful backdrop for a gathering - but honestly the first thing I noticed were the round tables with yellow tablecloths. Would love to zoom in on them.
Leave it to you to enhance the garden setting!
