Linderhof

Gardening, Cooking and Decorating on the Prairie of Kansas

Welcome to Linderhof, our 1920's home on the prairie, where there's usually something in the oven, flowers in the garden for tabletops and herbs in the garden for cooking. Where, when company comes, the teapot is always on and there are cookies and cakes to share in the larder.

OUR STATE FAIR IS A GREAT STATE FAIR IS A GREAT IS A GREAT IS A GREAT STATE FAIR HEY!

It wasn't our State Fair but it was the Minnesota State Fair for we spent Labor Day weekend in Minneapolis.     And Daughter Sarah and her Andy took us to the State Fair in St. Paul.

I haven't been to a State Fair since I was 20 . . . and I fainted in the "Freak Tent" (not because of the "freaks" but because there wasn't any air!)    So it was fun to go to a State Fair again!

And what does one see at a State Fair?

Baby lambs . . .

Baby ducks . . .

And food . . .

They sold cones and buckets of hot chocolate chip cookies

Cookies (not mine, alas, although I wish it were -- I was told that that food stand grosses $1.2 M during the fair!)

And only in Minnesota would you find . . .

Hot Dish is Minnesota's State Dish!

or . . .

The only church booth we saw at the Fair.   It was in an old building.

I do think Lutheran is German for coffee!!!

And, of course, . . .
The same woman has been sculpting the Fair Queens in butter for 40 years.
The Butter Sculptures and . . .

Garrison Keillor's tradition of taping his show at the Minnesota State Fair for broadcast the next evening.

We ended our evening with Garrison Keillor and his Prairie Home Companion from the Minnesota State Fair.

It's Wednesday and I'm joining Susan at A Southern Daydreamer for Outdoor Wednesday!     There isn't anything more "outdoor" than a State Fair!

That sounds like a good time! I think I could smell that particular midway smell - the combination of salt, sugar, grease, barbecue and popcorn. Did you go on any rides?

I love those fairs...we have a big annual one about 15 min. from my house and ever since I've been 2 years old I haven't missed a year.

Thanks for sharing Martha....

Looks like a great thing to see, it brought back memories of visiting the Texas State Fair in Dallas a few years back.

Garrison Keillor?!? I can't imagine a better show to attend at the Minnesota State Fair.

That butter sculpting is quite interesting...

Is the KS State Fair still held in Hutchinson? (I was born there.)

Looks like a wonderful time - a mix of nostalgia and the contemporary - and Prairie Home Companion to round it all out! Wonderful!

Could smell the cookies form here . . .

Joy!

I'll wager this was great fun. While we attend the county fair every year I've never been to a state fair. I loved your pictures. I hope you have a great day. Blessings...Mary

You mean it's a different "sweet martha" who makes all that moolah off those cookies? Too bad!!!

Yes, "Lutheran" is just another word for "coffee." It's what we're given in emergency rooms instead of plasma.

Love the baby animals ... and what fun to see Prairie Home Companion taped. I did that at New York's Town Hall in ... mmm ... 1983. Wow. I AM old!
And so is Keillor!

What is Hot Dish?

Martha,
Our son loves deep fried burritos!
I'm more of a waffle cake person! What a nice visit with Sarah and Andy! Those baby ducks are just the cutest things...they "quack" me up!
Fondly,
Pat
