Linderhof

Gardening, Cooking and Decorating on the Prairie of Kansas

Welcome to Linderhof, our 1920's home on the prairie, where there's usually something in the oven, flowers in the garden for tabletops and herbs in the garden for cooking. Where, when company comes, the teapot is always on and there are cookies and cakes to share in the larder.

The German In Me . . .

I suppose who not only likes to live in a clean house but likes to clean house!     And once a week (usually on Monday -- but not always -- you can't set your clock or calendar by me) I see that Linderhof is shining from top to bottom!

One room at a time . . . and when that room is clean, I often pick flowers for the table . . .

And this time, I took pictures as I finished each room -- recorded for posterity that Linderhof was clean!

The breakfast room

The dining room

The downstairs half bath (which is off the dining room)

Kitchen

Living Room

Front porch
(and yes, I do run the vacuum out here!)

Upstairs Hall

Bath

Guest Room

Master Bedroom

Sunroom

And over the years I've found those cleaning products that I can't live without.    Making my cleaning life so much easier.

I've always had problems with vacuums clogging -- I can't tell you how many times I sat on the floor with a stretched out coat hanger trying to get "stuff" (read dog hair) from the hose and "innards" of a vacuum.   When I heard about Dyson's "no clog" . . . I immediately wanted one.     And a trip to Best Buy in Wichita resulted in a Dyson in Linderhof's cleaning closet!

I liked it so much that I bought another for upstairs -- from Big Lots.   I've never had them clog, I've never had them repaired -- there are no belts breaking and no bags to buy.    If there is such a thing as a perfect vacuum -- it is a Dyson!

We have lots of windows in the breakfast room and two glass top tables in the living room.    The coffee table needs constant attention (not because of the table but because of our habits with wet glasses!)    I've never found a satisfactory glass cleaner until Susan at Between Naps On the Porch recommended "Fish Foam".

Thinking perhaps that it was made from a fish part which made it superior, I found that it actually is the name of a cleaning company that uses the foam in their cleaning business.   I ordered some and it is superior to anything else I've used.     There are cans upstairs and down . . . and a spare!

I have also found that spraying the cloth not the glass gives better cleaning results!

Our furniture is old and needs to be pampered.    I don't use much spray on the furniture -- preferring to just dust with a microfiber -- but when I do, this is the product I use.

It's pricey compared to what you find in the grocery store but it does give a good shine to furniture and it is made from beeswax and is a natural product.    The bonus, I found, is that it does a great job on the stainless steel appliances in the kitchen!

I have these upstairs and down and when I clean a new one is used for each room.

I'm not sure where I would be without microfiber cloths.     They make dusting so much easier and they're washable which means that you pay only once and the cloth cleans on and on!!!!

Except for the bathrooms and breakfast room, all the floors at Linderhof are wood.    When we had them refinished 12 years ago, our refinisher said to use one product and one product only on the refinished floors.

Bona Hardwood Floor Cleaner.     We buy it by the gallon -- one for up and one for down.    For years we put it in a squirt bottle and used the bona mop and a microfiber pad.     But then we found . . .

Rubbermaid refillable mops -- they fit the Bona cloths (or the Bona cloths fit them) and when empty you refill from the super gigantic size of Bona!     Although they're plastic, they're not disposable -- that I like!

And for all other cleaning . . .

I like Mrs. Meyers.      It's a good cleaner for anything else that may need a spritz of clean.

I do buy two of everything for I keep one up and one down.    Besides the good clean every week, I do touch ups almost every day -- a quick run round the upstairs with the Bona dusting mop, a quick wipe down of the sink, toilet and tub and a mob of the bathroom floor.     Downstairs I have to clean that coffee table every day and I also vacuum the living room and dining room.    After dinner, I always sweep and mop the kitchen as well.

For I do like a tidy house -- the German in me!    (But I don't hold a candle to my German aunts -- they washed and swept the front steps every day!)

This was as inspiring and practical as Linderhof is beautiful!

By the way, have your read "Elizabeth and her German Garden" by Elizabeth Von Arnim (or was it you from whom I heard of it)?

What a delightful book - witty and descriptive. You may like it :)

Oh my gosh....how do you do it all in ONE day! Lovely though....

Rebecca -- yes, I have that book and I adore it -- you reminded me that I need to reread it!

A lady after my own heart. But I don't clean every day any more. When I was younger, I think I drove everyone crazy. I mopped everyday, changed beds every other day, vacuumed and dusted everyday. I love clean, but once a week does it for me!

Your home is so lovely!

When we lived in Germany it was expected that I would wash all windows once a week, the steps from the street to the house AND the sidewalk in front of the house. Anyone who didn't do it had a visit from the town officials who would send someone to do it and bill the homeowner. That was in the 80's. I complied!

I don't remember how I found your blog, but I enjoy it so much. All that blue and white china! Thank you for putting this lovely effort together!

Another benefit of Mrs. Meyers...I have found, by happy accident, is that the basil countertop spray kills ants on contact. We had ants get into the kitchen and since Mrs. Meyers is made from natural, non-chemical ingredients, it was such peace of mind using it around food and children. Thanks for the enjoyable house tour...loved it! Everything looks so pretty, Martha! Also really enjoyed your front porch tea with your blue and white. Your home always looks so cozy and elegant at the same time!

I've always enjoyed keeping house too, these days I'm nothing like as keen as I was until my DH retired, I dusted and vacuumed through every weekday and had a cleaning routine - Monday was bathroom hall and stairs, Tuesday bedrooms etc. I baked every week and my family always had a main course and pudding cooked from scratch every day. I ironed everything including bed linen and still do. From the age of about 12 to be a housewife was all I ever wanted:) Happily for me ever since I married in 1972 that's precisely what I've been.

Martha,
I am impressed by your cleaning standards at your beautiful house! I also love my Dyson because I can actually see it work, filling up with dust and dog hair. :o)

Do you have a fool proof pie crust recipe for the processor?

Thanks for your visit to Butterbean Row. It is so nice to meet you!

I am going to be your newest follower.

Blessings,

I thought I read in a previous post a mention of Monday cleaning day..I thought Monday was wash day! LOL I love a clean house but can't clean that often except for the quick vacuum and pick up and bathroom stuff. I happen to be cleaning today. When you don't clean as often there is more to do. Seems like your house would take a long time! But I loved seeing your rooms!

I do enjoy cleaning when I have time to really focus on it, partly for the old furniture and the memories that surround that and many things in my house. And if feels so good when it's clean!

Thanks for all the recommendations on cleaning supplies. I'll give them a try. The Bona/mop looks especially appealing for the wood floors. Cherry Kay

Martha,
This is such a great post!!! Truly, most people don't realize what one goes through on a daily basis to keep a home...as in housekeeping! I, too, use an "all natural" cleanser...and have some on the upper and lower level living areas! next time you're in Wichita...you must stop in!
Fondly,
Pat

Now that is a clean house. It shines in the photos. Love the dyson. We got the one with the rotating head for the wand (it's purple). The suction makes something spin that powers the bristles. Great for doing carpet on stairs.
I have a regular cleaning pattern too. Starting on Monday as well. Ha!

Must be the German in me that can so appreciate a post on cleaning! My house is not as clean as I want it to be. Thanks so much for the tips.

I had read about the Fish glass cleaner on Susan's site, but glad to to know that you have also had good luck with it. I'm going to place an order and do some window cleaning in the near future!

I will also keep a look out for Mrs. Meyers; that sounds like something I would want to keep on hand.

My you have a lovely home.
Thanks for all the tips on your cleaning products. You should get a gift from all those you networked about.
I especially like the one on cleaning the hardwood floors. Since all of our floors are hardwood.
Wonder if they sell that up here in Canada.
