Linderhof

Gardening, Cooking and Decorating on the Prairie of Kansas

Welcome to Linderhof, our 1920's home on the prairie, where there's usually something in the oven, flowers in the garden for tabletops and herbs in the garden for cooking. Where, when company comes, the teapot is always on and there are cookies and cakes to share in the larder.

Lettuces

Every February, I buy packets of lettuce seed
My favorite is black seeded simpson
A leaf lettuce

And I sow them into the summer flower pots

To be harvest for late April and May dinners

The lettuces make the pots look a lot better than just plain brown dirt!

And we get a bonus of fresh lettuce!

Made into a wilted lettuce salad
Lettuce, radishes and green onion and chopped bacon
And a hot dressing of bacon drippings, sugar and vinegar and water

Poured over the lettuce while hot so that the lettuce "wilts" a bit!

It is one of my favorite spring dishes!

Martha,
I didn't try any lettuces this year, but will definitely try them in pots next year!!!
A few years back, I put them in the Herb Garden. . .and Pee Wee enjoyed the lettuces for us!!!
My MoMa made wilted lettuce and to this day, it is one of my favorite Spring dishes!!!
Fondly,
Pat
