Gardening, Cooking and Decorating on the Prairie of Kansas

Welcome to Linderhof, our 1920's home on the prairie, where there's usually something in the oven, flowers in the garden for tabletops and herbs in the garden for cooking. Where, when company comes, the teapot is always on and there are cookies and cakes to share in the larder.

Friends for Dinner

A friend's husband is out of town
So we invited her and her two boys over for dinner

We ate in the dining room
With the lace tablecloth

A bouquet of flowers in a silver bowl

And the Spode Blue Italian and Spode Blue Room
It was a casual meal, after all!

Big bowls of 5 Hour Oven Stew
(the house smells amazing while it is baking)

Skillet cornbread
(made like grandmother made it with bacon grease)

An old fashioned yellow cake with chocolate frosting
(because Daughter Sarah and I have been talking about this old fashioned cake)

We had a grand time
And enjoyed dinner conversation with both of her boys.

It was an early evening --
the boys, after all, had bedtime!

A perfect winter meal! How kind of you to invite your friend and her boys. It seems to me that people are quicker to invite men whose wives are away, so it was refreshing to read about this invitation!

Your table and party sound wonderful! I agree with Pondside - a perfect winter meal! We had a dear friend come to dinner last Sunday. His beloved wife died last November and we haven't seen him for a few weeks, so I wanted to make a bit of extra effort, and set the table the good dishes, etc. He said, "Do you always eat like this?" We don't -- but maybe we should! Why have beautiful dishes if they never get used?
